The Howling Miller tells the tale of Gunnar Huttunen, a high-strung miller who ends up in a tragicomic battle with the authorities. He expresses his feelings through howling, and not everyone is understanding of his plight.

The small man’s battle against the system is a universal theme, and this novel has also been exceptionally popular outside Finland. Translation rights have been sold to no less than 22 countries - thus measured, it is Paasilinna’s most successful novel. It has also been made into a popular film.
