Madventures

Milonoff, Tuomas - Rantala, Riku - Lahdenmäki, Ari

This guidebook for international adventurers is a comprehensive guide for the independent traveller. It tells you everything you need to know from how to finance your travels to where to go.

How do you arrange things so that you can spend a long time in faraway places?

How do you survive in the desert without water?

What do you do when you are hassled by cops on the take in Africa or threatened by a typhoon in Southeast Asia?

How do you travel responsibly and deal with the culture shock that every globetrotter can fall prey to?

Many people dream of travelling round the world and funding their travels by making a TV-series about it, but few succeed. Riku Rantala and Tunna Milonoff succeeded in this, and made Madventures, the best-known and most awardwinning adventure travel programme in Finland.

The Madventures book answers the questions that inexperienced backpackers worry about: How do you avoid a tourist trap? How do you survive a bus trip in Laos? How do you travel as far as possible as cheaply as possible? How do you pack a backpack? How do you beat the disgusting larva migrans parasites that have burrowed into your skin to breed from a ditch in Papua, New Guinea?

Madventures was shown on the Subtv television channel in Finland in 2002–2005, when it rose from a cult programme into the channel’s most watched Finnish programme. The series was repeated several times and had as many as 130,000 viewers. It won two Finnish media awards, in 2005 and in 2006.

The dvd has sold 55,000 copies, and the Internet fan sites and traveller communities Madventures.tv and Stranded.to are among the hundred most popular Finnish websites.
